I have frequent flyer points that I just need to use up this holiday season. I was thinking some place warm and vacation-y. Then I thought that this would make a great topic. So, if money wasn't an issue, where would you take a vacation? Be broad, be specific, be creative! Local or international? Country life or city?
My dream vacation is to anywhere I haven't been to. May it be Canada in the summertime or the Bahamas in the winter. Anywhere that I have yet to see is my dream vacation.

I always had this dream of my sister and I going to Ireland.
We would show up in the morning on some day, check into a small hotel or a B&B or something, and immediately go out to see the sights. I think we'd want to go to see the country first; we always thought of Ireland as this place with a hauntingly beautiful countryside. We'd eat a packed lunch, something small, in preparation for the giant dinner we would want to have of some genuinely Irish cooking. After watching a the sun descend over the Irish country, we'd go back into town and find some quaint little restaurant or pub to eat in. Soda bread; boxty, Shepard's pie, Dublin lawyer—we would gorge.
The next day we'd spend in town, trying to soak up some facets of modern Irish culture. I'm a huge fan a couple of Irish local bands, Chewing on Tinfoil and Kate's Party, so I'd drag my sister to their shows while we were there. More Irish food, more sight-seeing, probably some shopping because my sister loves to do that.
On the last night I'd drink my first alcoholic beverage, in all likelihood a pint of Guinness or some locally-brewed thing; then we'd get on a plane the next morning and go home.
I miss my sister, she lives kind of far away. Not only would I be at a dream place, I'd be there with my dream companion.

I love traveling so almost anywhere different from where I've been is interesting for me, but lately I've been really wanting to visit Barcelona.

Ugh Dan, don't go to Barcelona. I mean, go, there's a lot of stuff to see, everything is big. The Sagrada Familia and Park Guell (oh my god, Park Guell. Only thing I really loved.) are both worth hitting up, and visit the Barrio Gotico, too, but don't just do it at night, do it during the day when it's clean. Don't make Barcelona the only city in Spain you go to. Everything is so touristy and literally the only people you will meet there are foreigners. Go to Granada. It's more beautiful, in my opinion, and you really get an idea of what Spain is like. Also everyone there still speaks English. Barcelona was created for tourism, Granada has interesting history.
That's my rant about Barcelona, I didn't really like it very much. I've been thinking a lot about what my dream vacation would be, and I think the place doesn't matter as much as who I'm with. Also when I visit places, I try to do my best to assimilate with the culture, and not just wander around taking photos. I'd really love to go to Norway. Or Sweden. Or maybe Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Or Japan. I was born in Okinawa, but I don't remember anything about it. Apparently the best time to go is during the winter, because every other time of year is typhoon season. It's also ridiculously expensive to travel to, so I don't know if it'd be really worth it to go.

I completely understand where you're coming from with the touristy-side of Barcelona, but when I went I loved it. Granted, the city favoured us with a few happy accidents - we found a cafe that served the best hot chocolate I'd ever tasted, visited the Sangrada Familia on Palm Sunday and walked right into a procession, and found a 100 euro note on the floor of the Van Gough museum - but I think the blatant tourist culture pushed us to discover the real one under it, the city's heartbeat, that we wouldn't have otherwise. I suppose there's a infinite number of factors that help to define your opinion of a place, but I still think Barcelona has such an electricity about it. Either that or I was very, very lucky As for my dream place to visit, I think it would be Venice. It just seems so beautiful, and the fact it is quite literally sinking away means I'd be visiting somewhere that many generations before me will have appreciated but another after me might not, which has a sort of egotistic melancholy that attracts me more than it probably should

I ended up getting insulted by some foreign guy... But I've been to Venice! Go! It's super beautiful and cars don't fit in the city so they have taxis that are actually boats. Best place I've ever been.

Home! When you live away, home suddenly becomes a far more attractive place to spend your time. I've actually used all 5 weeks of my holiday going back home to England this year, something which I'd not even have considered pre-move.
On another note, if anyones dream holiday is to Paris, or more specifically Disneyland Paris let me know and I can sort out some free entries for you ^_^

My dream holiday would be a road trip across the USA. Mainly because I don't drive and don't see myself learning to drive, so this one has extra appeal due to its unattainability. In terms of short term dream holiday, I'm already brainstorming a trip around Cambodia and Vietnam. Home! When you live away, home suddenly becomes a far more attractive place to spend your time. I'm going to Paris in January on my way back to Australia, and I am super psyched! I've only ever been once before and that was around Bastille Day, so it was HEAVING (not that Paris is ever quiet), but that was ages ago and I don't remember much.

There are so many places I want to travel to and things I want to see and do, but I'm going to interpret 'vacation' to mean a relaxing holiday where sight seeing and touristy things aren't what I'm looking for. In that case, it would have to be a tropical island beach somewhere. Not really fussed where, but Fiji/Hawaii/Thailand/etc or somewhere similar where I can just lounge on a beach and enjoy the sun and the surf. But like I said, this is only for a vacation, not where I would spend my whole travels if I were looking for adventure or new experiences.

My dream vacation would be visiting relatives in the Shire. It would have to be very distant relatives, since all my immediate family is almost freakishly tall, but I guess that's the least of my worries with this plan.
If fictional places are out of bounds, I would love to visit the UK (after all, it did inspire the Shire, so that would do just fine). I'd love to go to London, then spend a while visiting the countryside. Or maybe St Petersburg. And Prague. You know what, my dream vacation would be one of those around the world type of things, hopefully in more than 80 days.

I have the book Road Trip USA which has 10 or 11 cross-country road trips, all on two-lane highways. I would really like to take all the trips at some point in time. I especially want to do what is left of Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway.

I really really want to backpack across Europe. It may sound like a cop-out, because it's a bunch of countries, but honestly, it's more the spirit of backpacking that I crave.
It's the feeling you get in hostels with a bunch of other people just as lost in this world as you are, searching for something you're not sure you can find.
It's the feeling from those tiny little towns on the mountains, with 500 residents and where no one speaks English but is happy to have you there anyway.
It's the feeling that even though we may seem alone in this world, there are so many people that can be there for us, and it reminds you that no matter how different we seem, we are all at least a little bit the same.
So I love travel, but not a specific place. I love the feelings and personal stories of all the places I see, and I wish I could spend my whole life exploring each and every one.

A trip across Europe. I've always wanted to visit overseas and Europe looks amazing. Just me and friends/significant other to explore the world.

By "Dream Vacation" you mean an actual dream, right? 'Cause I'm totally with Tuwhoo on this on (although Im likely a more distant relative than she)! ;D Anyways, I'd do some traveling in Europe B&B's. Take the country roads often and stay away from the Urban places for a good portion of time (but you know, cities also have thier perks. Particularly if you don't live in one.) Can't really give you specifics though 'cause I don't travel much .
